Vogue 1102: The Little Black Dress

DIY little black dress

Have you ever had an experience where you just looked at a dress and you knew that it was meant to be worn by you? Well, when I first saw Vogue 1102, I just knew that this dress was going to look stunning but I tucked it away in my pattern stash, waiting for the right time (and enough courage), to attempt my first Vogue pattern.

It wasn't until I sat down to write out a blogging schedule that I revisited this dress and saw it from a completely different lens. I was very inspired by Audrey Hepburn's Breakfast at Tiffany's and thought this would make such a beautiful, modern take on the little black dress. Looking in my stash, I found a thrifted, black special occasion fabric that I bought for $6.99 which was perfect for this pattern. Although, I have to be honest, this DIY was not without it's hiccups! While I was trimming with my Gingher scissors during the hemming process - I cut right through the dress and it couldn't be saved. I was crushed and I needed to start over, completely. Luckily, I found a gorgeous rayon-linen blend on clearance at Joann's that I ended up loving even more than the original fabric choice!

The rayon-linen blend gives the dress so much versatility. Now I can dress it down with a cute pair of sandals and a floppy hat or dress it up with my favorite heels and trench coat for errands in the city. I absolutely love this dress and pattern. In fact, I am so satisfied with the results that I can't imagine the dress in any other color, print, or fabric. Vogue 1102 is going back into my pattern stash, where it will probably rest for a few years but I know that whenever I pull it out again, it's going to produce something amazing

  1. Your dress is adorable , and I love to sew as well! You did a great job! I originally started as a style/sewing blogger, but with working full time, the sewing mostly went by the wayside, and I added travel. Now I am getting back into sewing and made some outfits...just need to get a photographer! Also I just saw you are in Seattle...I am in the area too! Awesome! I don't find many other bloggers here that sew...Just RivaLaDiva..she is amazing!

    1. Thank you so much Valerie! Finding time to sew can be a huge challenge - especially when you're travelling! My son and I recently came back from a trip to Wyoming and I was really tempted to take my sewing machine with me. haha. Seattle area sewing bloggers are hard to find! Initially even a Seattle fashion blogger was tough to find but I'm starting to notice more fashion bloggers popping up so hopefully our network of sewing and DIY fashion bloggers will expand too. I also follow RivaLaDiva! Her sense of style is so cute - I just love her stuff!

Send me a link to your blog! I would love to check it out! :)
