Travel Tuesday: Long Beach, Washington and Cape Disappointment State Park

Tuesday, June 14, 2016

Welcome to a new series on the blog... Travel Tuesday! Every Tuesday you can expect to find a variety of travel adventures, tips for traveling with baby, and other travel related posts.

First, a little bit behind the idea of Travel Tuesday! Scott and I used to travel and hike a lot before we got married and had Hugo. We would hop in the car, grab a few energy drinks and snacks, turn the radio up and ask: North, South, West, or East? We spent our weekends traveling anywhere and everywhere with no destination in mind. Of course, being settled eliminates a little bit of the same spontaneity but that doesn't mean that adventuring is impossible with littles! They love to explore too and it's so fun watching them light up as they experience new places.

We've come a long way in the last eight months navigating how to "get out of the house." At first, a trip to the mall felt monumental and now we spend our days off adventuring with Hugo! Hopefully this series will encourage you to explore whether locally or on a global scale. Mary Ritter Beard once expressed: "Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living," and I couldn't agree more.

Anyway.

Last weekend we visited Long Beach, WA and Cape Disappointment State Park. We invited my little brother Bailey to hit the road with us. After all the snacks, lunch, and bags were prepared we got out of the house around 10 a.m. which is a little late for a day trip but also a huge improvement on our normal time! Since we like to take our time and like to stop whenever we find something interesting we probably should have left much, much earlier.

South Bend, WA:

Our first stop was in South Bend. Cutest. Little. Town. Ever. In fact, Scott and I were already dreaming our way into the life of this little town. Once we caught a glimpse of the historical county courthouse, we just knew that we had to check it out! To our surprise, the courthouse also has a nice little park with lots of ducks, geese, and a fish pond. Hugo loved meeting ducks for the first time! We wanted to spend more time in South Bend but it was already getting pretty late and we still had awhile to go.

Things to Do in South Bend:

1.) The Pacific County Courthouse and park. (Evidently you can go inside on the weekdays!)
2.) If you like old houses with loads of charm, a walk around the historical homes is a must.
3.) Stop in at the Oyster Shack!

Long Beach, WA:

We finally made it to Long Beach around 1 p.m. and spent the majority of the day there where we explored the downtown area, Marsh's Museum (home of Jake the Alligator Man), took a free horse-drawn wagon ride, witnessed the World's Largest Frying Pan, and relaxed on the beach.

Things to Do in Long Beach, WA:
1.) Marsh's Museum - Lots of fun oddities to be found there!
2.) The Hat Shop
3.) The Kite Shop
4.) Free horse-drawn wagon rides (They start over by the park with the gazebo and sea captain wood carving)
5.) The World's Largest Frying Pan
6.) Go-carts
7.) Arcade and family fun center
8.) Horseback riding
9.) Scooter rentals.
10.) Enjoying the beach!

Cape Disappointment State Park:

My friends like to joke that Cape Disappointment is never a disappointment and I would have to agree. The park is located in Ilwaco, WA which is just outside of Long Beach heading south on highway 101. The park features a couple of lighthouses: North Head and Cape Disappointment. Since we made it there pretty late in the day, everyone was hungry and tired so we didn't attempt the trail to Cape Disappointment and decided to spend time at North Head which had easier access and allowed us to use Hugo's stroller. I also think that its nice that we weren't able to "do it all" so it requires us to go back and experience the park again. Also, bonus! We went on a free day that didn't require the discover pass - which we have yet to pick up despite it being free for us since we are a military family.

Things to Do at Cape Disappointment State Park:

1.) You can rent a variety of really cool places to stay in the park: a yurt, cabins, and I think old Lighthouse residences that are located by the North Head Lighthouse.
2.) The lighthouses!
3.) Beach access with amazing views.
4.) The Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center

So that's it for today's Travel Tuesday! Also, let me know if there is something that you would like to see in our new blog series!
